Winter Solstice 108 Sun Salutations

  • Light House Yoga 1060 Osgood Street North Andover, MA, 01845 United States (map)

The sun salutations are a staple in any vinyasa practice. The sequence is effective in warming up the body and connecting breath with movement. When practiced 108 times there is a sacred and spiritual significance that is added to this familiar flow.

The number 108 is sacred and significant in many ways, appearing in many disciplines from astronomy to yoga. The number 108 appears in ancient, sacred texts. For example, there are 108 Upanishads and 108 Tantras. In numerology, 108 equals 9, which symbolizes universal love, eternity and awakening. In Ayurveda, there are 108 sacred points on the body. In astronomy, the distance between the Sun and Earth is roughly 108 times the Sun’s diameter. Mala bead necklaces have 108 beads, which are used to count during meditation.

The practice of 108 sun salutations has been used to celebrate the changing of the seasons on the solstices and equinoxes. The Winter Solstice reminds us to honor taking time to slow down, and release what is no longer serving us, to recharge and inspire innovation for tomorrow.

Join us for this transformative and invigorating practice without fear! You are always able to modify and take breaks. Class will begin with gentle warm up movements. We will work on rounds of 10 sun salutations with breaks in between each set, concluding with a round of 8 before taking it down with a few restorative postures and a nice Savasana.
